Frequently Asked Questions About E-Rate

E-Rate is an FCC program that makes telephone and Internet service more affordable for schools.

According to the FCC website:

“In 2014, the FCC’s the Second E-Rate Order increased the cap for the program to $3.9 billion in funding year 2015, indexed to inflation going forward. The funding cap for funding year 2021 is $4.276 billion.”

Schools, libraries, or groups of schools or groups of libraries qualify for E-Rate funding.

E-Rate funding is broken into two categories. 

In broad terms, Category 1 funding covers your internet service provider and everything required to secure an internet connect to your building.

Also in broad terms, Category 2 funding covers everything in your facility required to distribute your internet connection throughout your facility to the end user including cabling, wireless access points, antennas, and more.

End user devices. Desktops, laptops, tablets, printers… basically anything that uses the internet connection does not qualify for E-Rate funding.

While you are not able to retroactively apply for funding, you can qualify for Basic Maintenance of Internal Connections (BMIC).

This is a reactive funding service to thinks breaking or needing to be changed (all the category 2 stuff — routers, switches, WAPs, UPS, cabling, racks) as well as the software supporting these devices.

  • Repair / upkeep of the hardware
  • Wire and cable maintenance
  • Configuration changes
  • Technical support (online or telephone based)
  • Software upgrades, bug and security patches
